329106 Kenna, female Australian Shepherd, 1 yr 8 mos. old, 51 lbs. Kenna was surrendered to the shelter yesterday 9/11. Owner said that she started to show neuro issues a year ago. She did have bloodwork and vet exam at some point where Kenna received steroids and antibiotics. Owner was unable to afford further diagnostics and the MRI that was recommended. She had tried herself over the summer to find placement so Kenna could get care, but was unsuccessful. Kenna has now gone down in the back end (past 5 days) and owner unable to lift her so surrendered to us. Kenna is able to defecate and urinate on her own. She is eating, and still full of life I am told. Staff say she is sweet and happy and loves affection. We are not sure what her prognosis will be once she has further diagnostics, but hoping a rescue would be willing to make the effort to see if anything can be done for her. We can't help here here so she will need to have a commitment from a rescue partner by noon Thursday 9/15.
Sept 14-15
Cait is fostering Kenna. She picked her up from IACS last night and stayed with her until 2:30am at VCA. VCA Specialty admitted her and her first appointment is with Dr Cross Friday.
Sept 15
Update - Dr Cross is seeing her today. I told them to go ahead with the MRI - there are a zillion things with really big words attached that can cause this. We could try to treat various things, but with an MRI we’ll know for sure. MRI is today - he’ll call me between 2 and 6 and let me know what it shows.
Sept 15 noon
MAYBE really good news! Appears to be an infection or auto immune issue affecting her brain (Cerebellum). Both can be treated with lots of medications. Dr Cross is doing a spinal tap and some other procedure today to be sure we start her on the right antibiotics. She’ll be ready to go home this evening - with lots of meds. Prognosis is guarded - but that is the best of the 3 outcomes.
Sept 16th AM
Kenna is back home with her foster family. Kenna was surrendered with her favorite unicorn and Madi (foster sister) thought it would be best to bring out her very own unicorn and hang out with her. For now, we wait. Test results from her spinal tap will help Dr Cross prescribe the appropriate medication. Her recovery chances are unknown, but if left untreated, she would not have survived. A year long infection brewing in her brain will take a while to reverse course. As always, prayers, good wishes, good juju is always appreciated.
Sept 19
Thank you for all who have donated to Kenna. It is with a heavy heart that I need to tell you that she passed away this morning. Prayers to Cait and her family for loving her. Thank you again for donating - we were able to raise nearly 63% of her bill which leaves funds for the next dog.
